The main function of anti-vibration mats in the subfloor construction is vibration reduction and propagation.

Anti-vibration mats are divided according to their location in the subfloor structure into:
- AVR sub-grid – the anti-vibration mat lies on the ground surface, possibly on the structural layer or on the construction of the railway substructure and its upper surface is in direct contact with the aggregate of the track bed.
- AVR in structural layers – the anti-vibration mat lies on the ground and its upper surface is in direct contact with the material of the structural layer.
- AVR for the sprung mass system – the anti-vibration mat is placed between two rigid concrete elements.
